Cameroon Human Rights Commission (CHRC) – Office of United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) operating in Central Africa : the necessity to consolidate their partnership to ensure the promotion and protection of human rights in Cameroon, particularly in the electoral context

ELECTORAL CONTEXT IN CAMEROON
The Chairperson of the CHRC shares his “Observations on the High Commissioner’s statement” with OHCHR Central Africa officials in Geneva.
On September 30, 2025, Professor James Mouangue Kobila, the Chairperson of the Cameroon Human Rights Commission (CHRC), was received for one hour and 15 minutes by two officials from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) operating in Central Africa: Mr Jean-Claude Misenga, a representative of the Field Operations and Technical Cooperation Division within the Africa Branch, and Mr Kieren Duarte-Costa. The meeting was attended by Ms. Cynthia Radert, Deputy Head of the National Human Rights Institutions Section at OHCHR.
The Chairperson of the CHRC was accompanied by Mr Philippe Amanye Botiba, Head of the CHRC Regional Branch for the Littoral Region.
Following the usual courtesies, Professor James Mouangue Kobila presented his counterparts with the CHRC’s “Observations on the press release of the United Nations High Commissioner of 2 September 2025” regarding the human rights situation in Cameroon, along with an analytical annex on the exercise of the right to public assembly by Cameroonians.
The presentation took place between 12:00 and 1:15 pm.
He then gave a detailed presentation on the current state of civic space in Cameroon, along with suggestions for its growth. He also provided his listeners with an overview of how candidacies are managed for the presidential election scheduled for 12 October 2025 before discussing the initial days of the electoral campaign that started on Saturday, 27 September 2025. He highlighted the need to strengthen efforts to combat hate speech and all threats to democracy and the rule of law in Cameroon.
At the conclusion of this high-level working session, characterised by constructive dialogues in a studious and cordial atmosphere, both parties concurred on the necessity to consolidate their partnership to ensure the promotion and protection of human rights in Cameroon, particularly in the electoral context.
